United Kingdom: Boris Johnson is new Prime Minister. “Brexit was a decision by the people which we must respect”

“I will be the prime minister of the whole United Kingdom” – Boris Johnson, the 77th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, promised this in a speech delivered after receiving the mandate to form a government from Queen Elizabeth II, before entering 10 Downing Street. Boris Johnson’s goals are to “unite” the country and to defend the values of freedom, the rule of law and democracy that are at the heart of British history. “Brexit was a fundamental decision by the British people” which “we must now respect”, he went on to say, repeating his goal to “develop a new partnership” with the EU. He thanked the 3.2 million EU citizens “for your contribution to our society”, and said he was convinced that a deal without checks at the Irish border could be reached. “We prepare for the remote possibility that Brussels refuses any further to negotiate”, in which case the UK will leave “with no deal”. “We will now accelerate the work of getting ready”. To those who prophesy disaster, he said: “there will be difficulties”, but “they will be far less serious than some have claimed”. “Do not underestimate our powers”; Britain is “leading the world” in many areas. It is time for us “to recover our natural and historic role”. Then Mr Johnson entered the black door to have his first working meeting.
