Hong Kong: Bishops on station assault, “we condemn violence of any nature and we hope offenders will be brought to justice”

“We are greatly aggrieved by the outbreak of violent assault at our citizens at the Yuen Long MTR Station. We condemn violence of any nature and means, and earnestly hope that the offenders will be arrested and brought to justice. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured”. This is according to a statement that has just been released by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong after a group of masked men armed with batons stormed a train station in the Hong Kong district of Yuen Long, near the border with China. At least 45 passengers were reportedly injured on platforms and inside train carriages, 6 of them seriously. The assault took place after the police dispersed a pro-democracy anti-government protest in Hong Kong city centre.
