Pope Francis: Gisotti, “immense sadness” for the father and daughter drowned in the Rio Grande. “He is praying for them and for all migrants”

“With immense sadness, the Holy Father has seen the images of the father and his baby daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande River while trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States”. This was said to the press by the interim director of the Vatican Newsroom, Alessandro Gisotti. “The Pope is profoundly saddened by their death, and is praying for them and for all migrants who have lost their lives while seeking to flee war and misery”, he went on. The one posted today is another shocking photo of migrants dying as they try to flee, after the one of little Aylan lying on a Turkish beach: after Europe, it is the turn of America to be shocked, now. The two bodies are lying down, soaked in mud and water, carried ashore by the flow of the river on the southern bank. The little girl’s arm is still clasped around the neck of her father who was probably trying to protect her by holding her tight. The umpteenth tragedy of immigration seems to have happened last Sunday. The two bodies were found on Monday and will be repatriated in the next few days. In the meantime, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador urged the families who are trying to migrate into the USA to reconsider their decision: “Don’t risk your lives”.
