Circular economy: European Action Plan. Timmermans, “the EU is a trailblazer for the rest of the world”

Bruxelles: Frans Timmermans, primo vicepresidente della Commissione europea

(Brussels) “The circular economy is key to putting our economy onto a sustainable path and delivering on the global Sustainable Development Goals”. Frans Timmermans, the first vice-president of the European Commission responsible for sustainable development, said this to mark today’s release by the Commission of a comprehensive report on the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan adopted in December 2015. “This report shows that Europe is leading the way as a trailblazer for the rest of the world. At the same time – Timmermans pointed out – more remains to be done to ensure that we increase our prosperity within the limits of our planet”. The 54 actions included in the plan launched four years ago “have now been delivered or are being implemented”, the Commission stated. “This will contribute to boost Europe’s competitiveness, modernise its economy and industry to create jobs, protect the environment and generate sustainable growth”. The findings of the report will be discussed during the annual Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference taking place in Brussels on 6 and 7 March. Turning waste into resources, developing a strategy to reduce plastic, and raising awareness among consumers are among the priorities in the EU plan.
