EU Parliament: digital copyright directive approved. Tajani, “modern rules for the protection of copyright in the world’s largest digital market”

(Strasbourg) The European Parliament has approved the directive on the reform of online copyright. After nearly three years, the legislation that protects the digital copyright of authors, journalists and creatives has passed. First MEPs turned down a request by the EFDD Group (where Five-Star MEPs also sit) to reject the legislative proposal (181 votes in favour, 443 against, 32 abstentions). Then the European Parliament rejected the proposal to make changes to the agreement with the Council (which would have delayed the adoption of such legislation until next Parliament: 312 votes in favour, 317 against, 24 abstentions). Finally, MEPs voted on the agreement reached between Parliament and Council, thereby approving the new directive: 348 votes in favour, 274 against, 36 abstentions. Following the approval of the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, said: “Today’s vote by the European Parliament gives the final green light to the new directive on the protection of copyright. This Parliament has demonstrated its determination to protect and enhance the priceless heritage of European culture and creativity. Our Union will thus be able to benefit from modern and fair rules for the protection of copyright in the world’s largest digital market”.
