++ Brexit: EU sources, maximum extension for UK withdrawal is May 26. No to May’s request to delay it until end of June ++

(Brussels) The British Government’s request for Brexit to be delayed until June 30 cannot be accepted in Brussels. The letter sent this morning by UK Prime Minister Theresa May to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, is rejected on legal grounds before it can become part of the political debate and reach the European Council on 21-22 March. Indeed – according to EU sources spoken to by SIR news agency – an extension until May 26 (the deadline for the European elections) would be acceptable to the European Union. But beyond that date, the United Kingdom, as a member of the EU, would be required to elect its own MEPs. In essence, legal experts suggest that the treaties and the rule of law at the European level “cannot be suspended”, not even with the certainty that London will leave the EU a few weeks after the European elections, and in any case before the start of the European Parliament’s new term on July 2. In other words, the European Council tomorrow may approve an extension of Brexit until May 26; but it is likely to reject Mrs May’s request to delay the UK’s “divorce” until the end of June.
