New Zealand mosque massacre: Catholic Bishops to Muslim community, “prayer and solidarity”

“We hold you in prayer”, the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of New Zealand wrote in response to the “terrible news of violence against Muslims at mosques in Christchurch”. 40 people are reported dead and twenty injured in what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described as “terrorist attacks” on the Al Noor Mosque in the city centre and on the Linwood Masjid Mosque. The attacks took place at about 7.40am local time. The Bishops say they are “profoundly aware of the positive relationships we have with Islamic people in this land, and we are particularly horrified that this has happened at a place and time of prayer”. “We are deeply saddened that people have been killed and injured”. The hearts of the Bishops go out to the victims, their families and the wider Muslim community. The Catholic leaders wish them “to be aware of our solidarity with you in the face of such violence”.
