Church of England: task force proposed to address homelessness. “Lack of affordable housing – a national scandal”

The General Synod of the Church of England calls for the establishment of a “task force” of the Anglican Church to address homelessness: the working group will be tasked with facilitating “a concerted initiative”, bringing “together representatives both of the major homeless charities and local and central Government in order to establish and co-ordinate a national strategy”, the motion approved by the Synod reads. The aim would be to “identify and fill gaps in provision for rough sleepers”. “The lack of affordable housing in Great Britain is nothing short of a national scandal”, Mark Sheard, the head of the Mission and Public Affairs Council of the Church of England, said during the debate. The task force would draw on the many experiences in the field, to offer “quick and effective solutions to this pressing problem”. 70% of Anglican parishes are already working on alleviating the suffering of homeless people. The Synod, which ends tomorrow, also approved a “code of good practices” which will guide parishes in the celebrations and the sharing of buildings with other Churches. Today’s discussion will focus on the protection of Creation and youth.
