In his letter released to mark the Feast of the Epiphany, Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Stockholm touched on many topics, reiterating his invitation to prayer: for peace in the world and particularly for Malmö, “which should become a city of peace and goodness instead of a city where gunshots are fired”, as was the case on St Stephen’s Day; and for the political situation, since Sweden is still without a government. This is a “sign of the profound contradictions and difficulties our country is facing”, and we have to “work together for unity and harmony”. With reference to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the cardinal invited the faithful to “pray for converts to Christianity who risk being deported” from Sweden. “It is regrettable that those who have found the way to Christian faith are no longer shown acceptance and empathy in our country”. In Sweden, “many signs point to a lack of respect for and understanding of those who believe and what they believe in”. “In a pluralistic society like ours, we should be more careful not to create unnecessary tensions that build up walls and fuel division”. Card. Arborelius also spoke of our “responsibility as Christians to be messengers of peace and protect creation”, with reference to the COP24 and the late-February meeting on sexual abuse convened by Pope Francis in Rome. Finally, he thanked all those who had offered him “support and kind words” for the 20^th anniversary of his episcopal ordination on 29 December.
