EU-Churches: meeting in Bucharest. COMECE, “put the person at the centre of political processes and technological developments”

The traditional meeting between the EU presidency and a delegation of Churches was held yesterday in Bucharest. The Church delegation was composed of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE); the Conference of European Churches (CEC); and the Committee of Representatives of the Orthodox Churches to the European Union (CROCEU). According to a statement from COMECE, the debate with Teodor-Viorel Meleșcanu, Foreign Affairs Minister of Romania (the country holding the EU presidency), focused on these six-months of “significant changes affecting the future of the EU as well as different spheres of our personal and societal life”. Indeed, the “upcoming institutional transitions, together with digitalisation and demographic winter” give rise to “fears and uncertainties” but also to “expectations and hopes”. COMECE encouraged the Presidency to “put the human person back at the centre of all political processes and technological developments”. A priority is to “promote a vision of decent, sustainable and participative work for all” so that young people and families have an opportunity to “fully express their talents and aspirations in their local communities”. The Churches also gave voice to “the legitimate concern of European citizens about their cybersecurity”: “the rule of law and fundamental rights should be the cornerstone of any policy measure in this regard”. COMECE also proposed a “reflection” on the Eastern Partnership for “a fair, responsible and people-centred cooperation between the EU and its neighbors”, in a credible EU Enlargement perspective.
