Nicaragua: 448 victims in 100 days of protests. Another day of prayer and fasting today

448 people have died in these months of turmoil in Nicaragua, the Nicaraguan Association for Human Rights (ANPDH) announced yesterday in its report. The victims include 31 under 17-year-olds, while 2,830 people were reported wounded and 718 detained. The majority of the deaths were recorded in the capital Managua: 189. Other cities particularly affected include Masaya (55 victims), Matagalpa (32), León and Carazo (28), Jinotega (19), and Estelí (17). In eight out of ten cases, the deaths were due to firearms. There has been a dramatic surge in violence in the past few weeks. Indeed, 97 people have died since 11 July when the previous report by ANPDH was published. The figures were released to mark 100 days since the start of anti-Government protests. In the meanwhile today, for the second consecutive Friday, the Church of Nicaragua has called a day of reparation and intercession for peace and reconciliation, inviting people to fast, and handing out a special prayer of entrustment across the country. And tomorrow, an event will be held in solidarity with the Church, particularly with the bishops who have been targeted by the paramilitaries in the last few weeks, while the special forces continue to patrol the two cities which, more than others, have rebelled to the regime: Masaya and Jinotega.
