The town of Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray is holding a “republican ceremony for peace and brotherhood” on Thursday, 26 July, to mark two years since Father Jacques Hamel’s murder. This is according to the website of the French town which “does not forget the tragic events that occurred on 26 July 2016”. The ceremony will take place at 10.30am in front of the stone that was unveiled last year, on which the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 are engraved. The event is organised by Mayor Joachim Moyse and will be attended by Interior Minister Jacqueline Gourault; the Prefect of the Region, Fabienne Buccio; and by the Archbishop of Rouen, Dominique Lebrun. The Diocese, too, has planned some events to remember Father Hamel: on the evening of Wednesday, 25 June, the Church of St Stephen will host a Rosary followed by a testimony and a meditation on living together by Fr. Pierre Belhache, diocesan director of relations with Islam. On 26 July, at 8am, there will be a small “procession” to the Church of Saint Stephen followed by a Mass at 9.00am presided over by Archbishop Lebrun. Father Jacques was slain by two terrorists on the morning of 26 July 2016 while he was celebrating the 9am Mass in that very church.
