The Netherlands: “Norbertines”, 120 leaders of the Order meet for General Chapter in Rolduc

Since yesterday, 120 abbots and abbesses, priors and prioresses of the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré, also known as “Norbertines”, are having a meeting at the Rolduc Abbey in the Netherlands. They are meeting for their General Chapter, an event that takes place every six years and lasts two weeks (until 5 August). This is the most important international meeting for the Order, which will also appoint a new board and a new abbot general who will succeed current Abbot General Thomas Handgrätinger. “For the first time in the century-old history of the monastic order of St. Norbert, the General Chapter is taking place in the Netherlands”, a statement on the website of the Diocese of Roermond, where Rolduc is located, reads. St. Norbert used to come to this monastery regularly before founding his own order (in 1120), and here is also where the “miracle of the spiders of Rodulc” took place, when the Saint ingested a venomous spider and survived. It is for this reason that the logo for the 2018 General Chapter features a spider web. The programme of the Chapter also includes a visit to Gennep, St. Norbert’s hometown, and to the Norbertine monastery of Saint-Catharinadal (Oosterhout).
