Migrants: Frontex, in June 56% less people crossed the Mediterranean Sea than in 2017. More pressure on Spain

About 13,100 people illegally crossed the main migratory routes to the EU in June, 56% less than in the same month last year. It was Frontex that today published the last month’s figures. Migratory pressure on the EU through the Mediterranean Sea is decreasing, with 60,430 people crossing that route since the start of the year. The Western Mediterranean route goes against the trend, instead, since the number of migrants going to Spain, most of them from Morocco, Guinea and Mali, has increased by 166% (about 6,400 people arrived in June, 14,700 people crossing that route since the start of the year, twice as many as in 2017). About 3,600 people went the eastern Mediterranean route from Syria and Iraq, one third less than in May. But, Frontex says, since illegal crossings by land on the border with Turkey have remarkably increased, the total number of migrants by sea (mainly from Tunisia and Eritrea) has stopped at about 24,300 since the start of 2018. As to Italy, about 3,000 migrants arrived in June, 87% less than in the same month in 2017, 16,100 since the start of the year, 81% less than in 2017. Few of them try to reach Europe via Serbia, Hungary and Croatia. However, Frontex speaks of an indefinite rise in migratory pressure along a parallel route, through Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina, as well as from Serbia to Bosnia Herzegovina.
