Spain: Bishops’ message to new PM Pedro Sanchez. “Ready to cooperate for the common good”

“The President of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Ricardo Blazquez, on behalf of himself and of all members of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference, congratulated Pedro Sánchez on his election by the Congress of Deputies as Spain’s new head of Government”. This is according to a statement posted on the website of the Spanish Bishops today, which relays part of the letter sent by the Cardinal of Valladolid. “We assure you of our prayer, may God give you His light and strength for you to meet the high responsibilities that have been entrusted to you by the Spanish people”, the Cardinal wrote, indicating in the list of responsibilities “the common good, unity, prosperity and social cohesion in our country, peace, justice, freedom and the common good of all citizens”. The Cardinal also said he and the Spanish Bishops are ready “to sincerely cooperate with the legitimate authorities of the State to better serve the common good”. The new Prime Minister Sánchez took an oath on the Constitution (but not on the Bible and the Crucifix, as is tradition) on Saturday, 2 June, in the presence of King Felipe VI. The new Government has still not announced the list of Cabinet ministers, but the prime minister is already at work. This morning, he received Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at the Moncloa Palace.
