“The Pope brings real cheerfulness. An event that will be positive for the people who have been generously working for such a long time and that will make history”. This is what mgr. Ivan Jurkovič, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN in Geneva, tells SIR in the run-up to Pope Francis’s visit to the World Council of Churches (Wcc) for its 70^th anniversary, on June 21^st. “The Catholic Church is not a member – the archbishop explains – but it’s a real feast for the Council when the Catholic Church is there”. While waiting for the Pope’s arrival, the film “Pope Francis: a man of his word”, directed by Wim Wenders, was presented in Geneva yesterday. This was promoted by the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, the government of Honduras, the Order of Malta and the Swiss Confederation. The director was with the ambassador of Honduras, the producers, and mgr. Dario Edoardo Viganò. According to mgr. Jurkovič, “that the presentation of the film and the Pope’s ecumenical visit take place at the same time is spot-on”. “The UN are particularly sensitive to an aspect that the Pope is outstandingly capable of: his ability to make ideas visible”, the archbishop explains, then he points out that “there are a lot of good ideas, generosity and plans here. No one sees them, though. If they are associated with the Pope, they can become visible and the goodness of the UN’s ideas can be promoted”.
