EU: Tajani meets Austrian Chancellor Kurz in Vienna. “Citizens expecting effective response on migration and asylum”

(Brussels) “Austria’s commitment to regard Europe as protective could not have been made at a better time. Migration crisis is endangering the European project, and we are running the risk of going back to the logic of national borders. Half billion citizens are still expecting an effective response, which the Union has not been able to supply, yet”. That was the “soul-searching” on the EU done by one of the highest levels in Brussels, that is, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani. Tomorrow, he is officially visiting Vienna to meet Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. Tajani will also hold a bilateral meeting with Kurz “to debate the priorities in the next six-month term of the EU Council presided over by Austria”, starting on 1 July. Today, the President of the European Parliament said: “The European Parliament has played its part by passing a reform of the European asylum system, combining firmness with solidarity. I appeal to heads of State and government to find an agreement at the next summit – on 28 and 29 June – starting from this text”. The European Parliament will work with “the Austrian Presidency on the several priorities of its six-month term: struggle against illegal immigration, security, prosperity, competitiveness, and a neighbourhood policy promoting stability, based on clear European perspectives for Western Balkans and South Eastern Europe”, said Tajani himself. “Moreover, I ask Austria to put Africa among the priorities in the agenda of its presidency”.
