USA: Bishops, preparing a letter to all Catholics about racism

(from New York) It won’t be a long letter. It will be sent to all the families and to every person in the diocese. Advisory groups will be opened in the schools to make young people aware “of this critical problem”. The problem of racism and the document that will soon be drawn up to provide guidance to all Catholics have been put on the agenda of the US Bishops, gathered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the spring session of the Bishops Conference meeting. Bishop Sheldon J. Fabre, president of the Racism Committee, announced that the letter on racism, firmly wanted by the bishops assembly last November, will be sent one year later to all prelates and will focus on the debate about native Americans, Afro-Americans and Hispanics, constantly targeted by racist language and deeds. In addition to condemning racism, the document will deal with racist issues that afflict public institutions and policies, the impact on social media and American society, and assisting priests, teachers, families and people in facing such a painful plague. “We would like to encourage to honestly search our souls in this respect – mgr. Fabre said – and we will take inspiration from Prophet Michea’s passage when he calls the faithful ‘to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God’”. The first draft of the letter, which the bishops are already working at by grouping the topics, will be out next November.
