Spain: Juncker and Tusk congratulate new PM Pedro Sánchez. Trust in Madrid. “European unity more needed than ever”

(Brussels) “I am confident that the Spanish government will continue to contribute constructively to a stronger, united and just Europe”. The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Junker, wrote this in a congratulatory letter to the new “President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain”, Pedro Sánchez, upon his election as prime minister today. Also on behalf of the European Commission, Juncker wrote that Europe is a “challenge” we face “together”, thereby expressing his “full trust” in Sánchez’s commitment since “Spain plays a very important role in the European project”. Congratulations to the new prime minister also came from the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk. “Your appointment comes at a challenging time for Europe. European unity is now more needed than ever”, President Tusk, who will meet Sánchez at the European Council in June, wrote. “I trust that you and your government will play a constructive role in the European Union”.
