Churches-EU: Sofia, a meeting tomorrow between Comece-Kek tomorrow and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva to coincide with Bulgaria’s presidency of the EU Council

Sofia, sede del ministero degli Affari esteri

A meeting will take place in Sofia, tomorrow, Tuesday May 8th, between the leaders of the European Churches and the Bulgarian presidency of the EU Council, a meeting that the Commission of EU Bishops Conferences (Comece) and the Conference of European Churches (Kek) traditionally organise to coincide with any new EU presidency. The purpose of such meetings is to try and find the best possible partnership in the priorities of the presidency on duty and the prospects of the European Churches. The Comece delegation will be chaired by the president of the Bulgarian Bishops Conference, mgr. Christo Proykov, while Kek will be led by the general secretary, father Heikki Huttunen, with some Protestant pastors from the Bulgarian communities. They will give to the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Ekaterina Zaharieva, a document called “Reflections of the Catholic Church on the priorities of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU”, which contains comments and recommendations about the priorities of the Bulgarian presidency grouped by four key themes: “The future of Europe and young people”, “Western Balkans”, “Security and stability” and “Digital economy”. The agenda also includes the problem of migration, about which the Churches propose an approach focussed on people that is respectful of their fundamental rights.
