The Catholic community of Liege is shocked and joins in prayer. This morning, a 36-year-old man, Benjamin Herman, killed two policewomen and a passer-by in downtown Liege. Mass in memory of the victims will be officiated in the Benedictine church in Boulevard d’Avroy, just where the gunshot took place, while the archbishop of Liege, Jean-Pierre Delville, will take part in the prayer of the Community of Sant’Egidio in the Church of St Bartholomew, in Place Saint-Barthélemy, at 8 p.m. After the tragic events that have upset downtown Liege, a few hundreds of metres from the bishop’s palace, mgr. Delville expressed his sympathy and moral support to those who have been somehow affected. A release issued by the diocese says that “the archbishop, Jean-Pierre Delville, and the Christian communities of the diocese of Liege have been deeply upset by the gunshot that took place in Boulevard d’Avroy earlier today. They express their sincere sympathy to the families of the two police agents and to the young woman who have been killed. They also express their sentiments of friendship and solidarity to the Mayor of Liege and to the members of the police who have been hit, once again, in their mission at the service of the population and who have firmly and bravely responded”.
