Pope Francis: audience, “without the power of the Holy Spirit, we cannot do anything”, anointing is Jesus’ “ID card”

“Without the power of the Holy Spirit, we cannot do anything: it is the Spirit who gives us the strength to move forward!”. Pope Francis said this, speaking off the cuff at his general audience catechesis today, in which he explained that “being reborn to divine life in Baptism is the first step; then we have to act as children of God, that is to say, to become conformed to Christ Who is at work in the holy Church, to become sharers in His mission in the world”. This is what the anointing of the Holy Spirit brings about: “Without His strength, there is nothing in man”. “Just as the whole life of Jesus was enlivened by the Spirit, so too the life of the Church and of each of her members is under the guidance of the same Spirit”, Pope Francis said: “Conceived of the Virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus undertakes his mission after being anointed by the Spirit who descends and remains upon Him as He emerges from the water of the Jordan”. “It is beautiful to see how Jesus introduces himself, what Jesus’ ID card in the synagogue of Nazareth looks like”, the Pope continued off the cuff, before citing Jesus’ words: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; for He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor”. “Jesus introduces himself in the synagogue of his village as the Anointed One, as the one who has been anointed by the Spirit”, Pope Francis said, always speaking off the cuff: “Jesus is filled with the Holy Spirit and is the source of the Spirit promised by the Father. Indeed, on the evening of Easter, the Risen One breathes on his disciples and says: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’; and on Pentecost day, the power of the Spirit descends upon the Apostles in an extraordinary form”.
