Politics: Card. Bassetti, “The game is not lost”, despite “concerns, difficulties, confusion, tensions and protests, social unease, stalemate and confusion of roles”

“The game is not lost” in politics. Not even despite the “concerns”, the “difficulties”, the “state of prostration”, the “climate of cultural and moral confusion”, the “widespread resentment”, the “indifference to the fate of the other”, the “visible tensions and protests”, the “social unease”, the “deadlock”, and the “confusion of roles” that have marked the beginning of this parliamentary term. Indeed, “the country is healthier” than it is portrayed. With a transparent, responsible and informed speech, Card. Bassetti introduced the second day of the CEI assembly, which was kick started by Pope Francis yesterday evening. The Church, the President said on behalf of his brother Bishops, “certainly keeps a close eye on the entire country, especially at a time as delicate as the present”, and does so with a gaze that is always constructive and future-oriented. “It is probably not difficult to vent a plethora of concerns in the face of the difficulties faced by our people, due to a decade-long economic crisis that has had a huge impact on social stability itself”, Mgr. Bassetti commented: “And it is not difficult to observe how this state of prostration was exacerbated by a climate of cultural and moral confusion, thereby giving rise to widespread resentment, indifference to the fate of the other, visible tensions and protests. Finally, it is not difficult to see that this social unease has had a strong influence even on politics, an influence that is visible in the stalemate and confusion of roles that have marked the start of this parliamentary term”. “But don’t you think, dear brothers, that even in the present context, there are good reasons to say that the game is not lost?”, the bishop asked those present: “Don’t you think that the roots are good and the country is healthier than it is often portrayed? Don’t you think that not only are we not in disarray and disoriented, but there is still great potential for the common good?”.
