United Kingdom: “Christian Aid”, 9 million pounds to build homes in Haiti. Collection in 13,000 Christian Churches

Hurricane and quake-resistant homes like that of Villa, a lady from Torbeck, southern Haiti, who managed to shelter more than 50 neighbours in his house, when Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti last September. This is how “Christian Aid”, the most important British ecumenical charity providing aid to developing countries, wants to spend about 9 million pounds, over 10 million euros, that were hopefully raised last week. The figure, which will be confirmed only in the coming months, is an estimate based on last year’s collection, press officer Claire Meeghan told SIR news agency. Thousands of Christian volunteers handed out the red envelopes from house to house during “Christian Aid Week”. Taking part in the collection, which was also promoted on social media with the hashtag #StandTogether, were more than thirteen thousand Christian churches. “Christian Aid” was founded in 1945 by the Christian Churches in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and is present in 37 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, where it sponsors projects run by local communities. Interviewed by the BBC, the charity’s CEO Khozi Mukwashi admitted that there have been fewer donations this year, also due to the abuse scandal that broke out last February, but called on everyone to focus on positive stories like the story of Villa, who survived two disasters and was able to help other people.
