“You are either with God or with the devil: the rejection of Satan and the profession of faith go hand in hand”. Pope Francis made these off-the-cuff remarks during today’s audience as he commented on the moment in which, during the rite of Baptism, Satan is rejected before professing the Creed. “As the water of the baptismal font is blessed, we prepare our hearts to access Baptism”, Pope Francis explained: “This happens with the rejection of Satan and the profession of faith, two acts that are closely linked”. “As I say ‘no’ to the wiles of the devil – the devil is the one who divides – I am able to say ‘yes’ to God who calls me to become conformed to Him in thoughts and deeds”, the Pope continued. “While the devil divides, God always unites the community, all peoples, in one People”, he added off the cuff. “Our adherence to Christ cannot be subject to any condition”, he warned: “We need to move away from certain connections to be able to really embrace others”. “We say to those people with an unclear profile who always seem to manage: ‘This person goes well with God and with the devil’”, the example cited by the Pope: “This is not good: you are either with God or with the devil, the rejection of Satan and the profession of faith go hand in hand. We need to sever some ties and move on in order to take the new way which is Christ”.
