Sweden: meeting of church leaders and Foreign Minister on “freedom and democratic space for religious minorities under threat”

A meeting of the leaders of the Churches in Sweden and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström took place in Stockholm yesterday, about “freedom and democratic space for religious minorities under threat”. It was made known through a press release by the Council of the Churches. The reason for the meeting was: “recent experience of the leaders of the Churches in Myanmar (Burma) and India”. It was necessary to tell the Minister about “what we have seen and what we hear from our Christian brothers”, said the Cardinal of Stockholm Anders Arborelius; and it was necessary “to listen to his opinion on how Sweden, the EU and the UN are working to improve the situations of minorities. We said we would like to take part in this important work”. As for Syria, the Churches are asking the Minister to help, in such a way that all citizens may achieve decent living and citizenship conditions, on an equal basis; support interreligious work in favour of social cohesion and reconciliation; support democratisation process by involving religious communities and the civil society. Supporting reconstruction in Syria is part of government programmes as a way to promote future peace; “as for interreligious work, social cohesion, democracy and reconciliation, the Minister said to be in favour of constant dialogue with religious communities”, said Antje Jackelén, Archbishop of the Church of Sweden.
