“The terrible loss of human lives in Gaza caused by the use of real ammunition against civilians by the Israeli Army must be condemned without excuse. Israel has a right to defend itself as well as moral and legal responsibility to use proportionate power, without preventing the injured from receiving medical treatment”. Those words were spoken by Msgr. Declan Lang, President of the Holy Land Coordination (HLC), including bishops representing the USA, Canada, EU and South Africa, in a note made known yesterday evening and signed also by the bishop of Southwark, Christopher Chessun, representing the Church of England in the HLC. “These protests are taking place against the drastic deterioration of the humanitarian situation, leaving few hopes and going on hindering peaceful solutions – it is said in the text sent to SIR. – Hundreds of families all over Gaza are mourning their loved ones, the dead and the injured. Any kind of violence is negative for peace efforts, and we cry for a peaceful solution: ‘Two Peoples, Two States’, with Jerusalem as shared capital. We are praying for all the people suffering from this conflict, and for peace in Jerusalem”.
