“The Winter Paralympic Games will start in two days in the city of Pyeongchang, South Korea, which has recently hosted the Olympics”. The Pope recalled this before greeting the Italian-speaking faithful at the end of his Wednesday general audience. The Olympics “showed us that sport can build bridges between countries in conflict and make a valuable contribution to peace among peoples”, Pope Francis continued. Indeed, “even more so, the Paralympic Games show that one’s disabilities can be overcome through sports”. “Paralympic male and female athletes are, for all of us, an example of courage, constancy, and tenacity in overcoming one’s limitations”, the Pope said, paying tribute to the Paralympic athletes: “Sports thus become a great school of inclusion, but also of inspiration for one’s life and of commitment to transforming society”. “I extend my greetings to the International Paralympic Committee, to male and female athletes, to the authorities, and to the Korean people”, Pope Francis said: “I assure you of my prayers that this event may bring joyful and peaceful days to all”.
