Croatia: Zagreb, a conference on “Priests and Sundays”. Puljic (president of the Bishops Conference) “a holiday reduced to a free day of fun”

“Priests and Sundays”: this is the title with which the seventh pastoral and catechetic conference for priests, organised by the Croatian Bishops Conference, began at the Diocesan Pastoral Institute in Zagreb. “The Lord’s Day makes us engage in our priestly mission more responsibly, in a secularised world where Sundays have been reduced to a mere free day of fun”, the archbishop of Zadar, mgr. Zelimir Puljic, president of the Croatian Bishops Conference, said to the priests who had come from all over Croatia. The prelate warned the presbyters of the danger of “going with the flow and ruining the meaning of Sundays by reducing it to a mere day of fun”. “Priests – he ended – must help the faithful rediscover Sundays as a day of prayer, of liturgy, of catechesis, as well as a day to spend with their families”. “A respect for Sundays, deeply rooted in the Croatian population – mgr. Ivan Sasko, auxiliary bishop of Zagreb, insisted instead –, might help us spread a culture in the true spirit of Sundays”. In his opinion, “Sundays are a good starting point for all the questions about the pastoral matters of the Church”.
