Bosnia Herzegovina: “in the Serbian Republic, Catholics are disappearing”. Mgr. Tomasevic (Bishops Conference), “an issue that requires courage”

“In the Serbian Republic, Catholics”, one of the two confessions of the Balkan country, “are disappearing. In some parishes, where there used to be thousands of devotees, no one’s left”. This was stated by Miljenko Anicic, director of the European Academy at the diocese of Banja Luka, where a workshop was held on March 3rd about “Catholic-Croatians in the reality of the Serbian Republic in Bosnia Herzegovina: situation and prospects”. According to Anicic, this situation has been caused not only “by the war and the ethnic cleansing that continued even after the end of the conflict, but by a deliberate disappearance of the Croatian population”. There are another 15 parishes that might disappear, some of which have less than ten parishioners now. “One must be brave enough and address the subject”, stated mgr. Ivo Tomasevic, general secretary of the Bishops Conference of Bosnia Herzegovina, who confirmed the alarming figure: from 50 thousand Catholics in the diocese of Sarajevo, only 760 are left. “No strategy has been implemented to make the evacuees come back home; actually, it seems the purpose was preventing them from coming back”. In his speech, Frano Piplovic, an expert, described the different dimensions of the issue, pointing out that the Dayton agreement did not solve the problem of the evacuees and, despite reassurances, the situation is not ideal for them to come back. The participants in the workshop acknowledged that the Catholic Church has played an effective role over the last few years.
