EU: Florence, “The State of the Union” is back to discuss “Solidarity in Europe”. Opening address by Mr Mattarella:

 

“Solidarity in Europe” is the theme chosen for the 2018 edition of the State of the Union, the event that has been hosted in Florence for 8 years. From 10 to 12 May, the Tuscan capital will offer one of the most exclusive opportunities for reflection on Europe. The overarching programme has already been made available online by the European University Institute; it features discussions on economic issues, monetary and fiscal policies, social investment, migration-related issues, defence and security, climate change and energy. The opening address is entrusted to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Keynote speakers at the plenary sessions scheduled for 10 May at the Badia Fiesolana include Irish President Michael D. Higgins, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. As is customary, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the President of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, will take the floor the next day at Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. On the same day, also Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the EU’s High Representative Federica Mogherini, the ECB’s President Mario Draghi, and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will address the audience. The next Prime Minister of Italy will be in charge of the closing remarks. Speakers at the event will include European commissioners, academics, and representatives of the economic world, the business world and the social sector (https://stateoftheunion.eui.eu/).
