Kosovo: border agreement with Montenegro ratified. EU Commission, “step forward in the neighbourhood policy”

(Brussels) Last night Kosovo’s Parliament has ratified an agreement with Montenegro on the border demarcation between the two countries. The vote on the law, which had caused the previous government to fall, took place despite the session being interrupted several times by tear gas thrown by opposition MPs on the pretext that Pristina was giving ground to Podgorica. 80 out of 120 MPs voted in favour of the deal. The European Commission welcomed the ratification, describing it as “a real achievement, a welcome and concrete progress, very much in the spirit of good neighbourly relations as well as the new Commission Strategy for the Western Balkans”. This was said in a joint statement by High Representative, Federica Mogherini; Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos; and Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn. The ratification was the main condition for visa liberalisation for the citizens of Kosovo, together with the commitment on the part of Pristina to intensify the fight against organised crime and corruption. “A vote for this ratification is a vote for the state of Kosovo and for freedom of movement”, said Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, insisting on the importance of the ratification that was boycotted by several MPs. The EU Commission expects “all sides in Kosovo to continue the hard work and successful efforts to achieve visa-free travel for the people of Kosovo”.
