Bruxelles: la sala stampa allestita per il Consiglio europeo

(Brussels) The leaders of the EU countries who will be attending the European Council in Brussels from 3pm this afternoon until about 1pm tomorrow are now arriving in Brussels. Prior to the Summit on the economy, trade, the Balkans, taxation (web tax), Turkey, Brexit, and the euro area, the leaders will be holding discussions divided into political groups. On the agenda is also the adoption by the European Council of the informal conclusions strongly condemning the attack that took place against Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, UK. Today, UK Prime Minister Theresa May will update the leaders who will “discuss the incident and its possible implications” for security in Europe and relations with Moscow. With regard to Brexit, the President of the European Council wrote in his invitation letter to the 28 leaders: “European citizens will be fully protected from the consequences of Brexit” even during the transitional period that is to last until 2020. “This also means that our citizens crossing the Channel in this period will not get worse treatment than those who did so before”. Yesterday, Donald Tusk issued a recommendation for the Summit, inviting the leaders to sign the transition deal that had been agreed upon by the representatives of the EU (Barnier) and of the United Kingdom (Davis) earlier this week. The Summit will also be an opportunity to discuss the steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Finally, ECB President Mario Draghi and Eurogroup President Mario Centeno will brief the Summit on economic and monetary affairs.
