Council of Europe: Tajani (EU Parliament) about US tariffs, “no to a trade war”. Yes to a web tax

(Brussels) “I asked Facebook founder to come to the EU Parliament to explain how Cambridge Analytica could use the personal data of millions of citizens to affect the US president election and the Brexit referendum”. Antonio Tajani highlights some points of the opening address he has just given at the EU summit in Brussels. As to US tariffs, he explains: “the European Parliament has said it is concerned about potential US steel and aluminium tariffs. The real problem is Chinese overcapacity and the unfair practices they engage in to dump it on other countries. The United States and the EU, instead of starting a dangerous escalation, should join forces on this issue”. Tajani claims that “the USA and the EU are two sides of the same coin” and “a trade war should be avoided”. As far as a web tax is concerned – of which the European Parliament has given a favourable opinion –, he states: “The taxable income hidden by cartels with multinationals or web giants has been estimated to be at least 600 billion a year. For the EU countries, the loss of tax revenue would exceed 100 billion. The European Parliament has just passed a resolution for a minimum EU business income tax rate, asking that they be taxed where they create value. The EU Commission’s plan for the web tax goes in the right direction”. The Parliament’s one on “EU funds” from the EU’s own budget “adopted last week wants the web tax to help increase the next budget, without putting any more pressure on citizens and net contributors”.
