(from New York) “We call upon Congress to work towards a bipartisan and humane solution” for Dreamers “as soon as possible”. Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Chairman of the Committee on Migration of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) said this on behalf of all US Bishops. After the National Call-in Day on Monday in favour of people protected by DACA, the program which allows those who were brought to the US as children by their parents to remain in the US – the program was blocked by the Trump Administration, putting approximately 1,800,000 people at risk of deportation -, the Bishop praised those who have joined the campaign because “protecting these young people from deportation is an issue of human life and dignity”. On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States dismissed the Trump administration’s challenge of a San Francisco federal judge’s decision requiring the Government to keep the DACA, because that was not a matter of national urgency and because data on crime and violence related to these young people are difficult to verify. Given the Californian judge’s ruling which echoed the one issued by a federal judge in New York with similar motivations, the Supreme Court preferred to wait for the Court of Appeals’ decision before hearing the case, not wanting to bypass appeals courts: it therefore rejected the Trump administration’s request. As a result of this, the 700,000 young people at risk of deportation will be able to renew their DACA, but new applications will not be accepted. The Bishop welcomed the Supreme Court decision, explaining that it “does not reduce the urgency of finding an immediate legislative solution for Dreamers” as “the anxiety and uncertainty that Dreamers and their families face remain unabated”.
