Iceland: Bishop Tencer about bill of law to ban circumcision, “we fully support Jews and Muslims”

“First, I would like to say that I perfectly understand the concept of circumcision and that this tradition was and is alive among God’s People and in the Old Testament, as well as among Muslim believers”. This has been written by the Bishop of Reykjavik, David Tencer, in a letter to Salmann Tamimi, imam of Ármúli mosque, in Iceland’s capital, about a bill of law that would ban circumcision unless for health reasons, that was submitted a few days ago by MP Silja Dögg Gunnarsdóttir (Progressive Party) and is supported by the MPs of the Pirate Party, the leftist Green Party and the People’s Party. “Jesus Himself was circumcised, as were His apostles, but for Christians the body does not have to be circumcised, it is the heart and the ears that have to be circumcised”, the Catholic Bishop writes, and that “a person who belongs to God should be circumcised inside, with a circumcision of the heart”. Speaking of the bill of law, mgr. Tencer writes: “We notice other people’s concern for this matter: some people seem to want to use circumcision to persecute someone for their religion”. “We fully support Muslims and Jews”, the Bishops claims, “in their fight to freely express their faith”. About such matter and with the same concerns had card. Marx, president of Comece (Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences), taken position yesterday.
