Portugal: Fatima, international workshop on religious tourism. Participants from 39 countries

The sixth international workshop on religious tourism is going on in Fatima. In particular, this year’s date is dedicated to the theme of “globalisation” and its impact on religious tourism. About 700 participants (tour operators, travel agencies, hotel managers, companies in this sector) from 39 countries met. The goal of the event is “promotion of exchanges between participants; promotion of Portugal as favourite destination for religious tourism on international level; and strengthening the importance of religious tourism in the context of worldwide tourism industry”, say the organisers. Yesterday, a seminar was held to delve into the theme. On welcoming participants at the Paul VI Pastoral Centre, Dean of Fatima Sanctuary Father Carlos Cabecinhas recalled that “the celebration of apparitions in the centenary strengthened the international role of Fatima, acknowledging this place on international level: the most meaningful destination of religious tourism is in Portugal”. The novelty of the 2018 forum will be tomorrow, in Guarda: a day dedicated to examining the dimension of Jewish religious tourism. Isaac Assor’s speech is scheduled. Assur is in charge of Alegretur, a leader in the sector; his speech will focus on Christian and Jewish tourism in Portugal.
