(Brussels) The results of the informal European Council of EU heads of State and government (going on in Brussels) will be debated during the mini-plenary of the European Parliament, scheduled on 28 February and 1 March. MEPs will debate the results of the meeting dealing with the process for selecting the next President of the EU Commission through the mechanism of the so-called Spitzenkandidaten (main candidates); the composition of the European Parliament after 2019 elections; and the long-term budget of the EU after 2020. The plenary “is ready to support the appeal of the European Commission to EU governments – says a note from Brussels – to determine whether Poland is running the risk of seriously violating EU values or not”. MEPs “will express their concern about the current rule of law in Poland; separation of powers; independency of the judiciary; and fundamental rights”. A resolution on the decision of the Commission to activate article 7, paragraph 1, of the EU Treaty will be put to the vote on Thursday, 1 March. On Monday, 26 February, the plenary will be preceded by an audition of ECB President Mario Draghi (Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs). Draghi will speak about the latest developments of European economy.
