Germany: Lent, action launched to educate about responsible water usage

A hot shower and clean tap water are normal things for people living in Germany, but for many people in the world all this is not yet a reality. The joint Lenten action proposed this year by Misereor (the German Catholic Bishops’ Organisation for Development Cooperation) and the German Catholic Youth Federation (BDKJ) includes activities of empowerment, information and fundraising under the motto “Enough! Water is a human right”. The national activities started at St. Lantpert’s Catholic parish in Munich-Milbertshofen last weekend, with the presentation of several proposals developed by Misereor and BDKJ: workshops in which participants address different topics related to water wastage, global shortages and the intensive exploitation of water worldwide. Together with Father Frederick D’Souza, director of Caritas India, the young people present at St Lantpert’s familiarised with the projects underway in the Indian village of Barhanpur where people are working to ensure water supply with the help of projects financed by Misereor and youth formation. “Under the project, young people learn what they can do to tackle injustice”, said BDKJ federal president Fr. Dirk Bingener, and “this is true both for those who are engaged in Germany and for those who work to help young Indians”.
