The Netherlands: Dutch religious leaders wrote to Prime Minister Rutte. “Commitment to solving the Yemen crisis”

A letter signed by religious leaders and representatives of various philosophical organizations in the Netherlands was addressed to Prime Minister Mark Rutte with a view to drawing attention to the “situation of innocent citizens in Yemen” who live in “extremely distressing and life-threatening conditions” due to the ongoing war and subsequent famine. The letter reports that “22 million out of 29 million people in Yemen are in need of assistance; of them 14 million are on the brink of starvation” due to what has been called by the UN the “worst man-made humanitarian disaster”. Faith and philosophical communities therefore call on Dutch political leaders to “do all they can” to solve the crisis. “We must break the feeling of helplessness that threatens to overwhelm us”, the letter reads, calling on the Government to “invite all parties involved in the conflict in Yemen to agree to a ceasefire as soon as possible”, to stop using “hunger as a weapon of war”, and to create a “safe humanitarian corridor for the provision of food and medical supplies to the Yemeni people”, as provided for by the United Nations Resolution 2417 (2018). The letter was signed by many, including the President of the Dutch Bishops’ Conference, Mgr. Hans van den Hende; the President of the Council of Churches, Dirk Gudde; the Jewish community; several Muslim communities; the Buddhist Union; the Hindu Council; and the Humanist Association.
