EU-Balkans: Varna, regional summit between Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Greece. Borissov, “more connectivity to strengthen the Union”

(Sofia) Today, Varna (Bulgaria) is hosting a four-party summit between Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Serbia, with the involvement of the countries’ Prime Ministers and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Talks will focus on regional cooperation, security in the Balkans, and the state of common projects in energy, transport and infrastructure, many of which will be completed with the support of European funds. “The purpose of our meeting and of our quartet – the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said – is to increase the level of connectivity in the areas that concern the EU, so as to strengthen the Union in the energy, infrastructure and digital domains”. And he added: “We believe that Serbia’s accession to the EU will make the EU stronger”. In addition, Borissov highlighted how important it is to diversify the energy sources. The Rumanian Prime Minister, Viorica Dancila, emphasised, instead, the role of the summit for “the geopolitical situation” and wished that “dialogue between the Balkan countries may continue, so as to achieve greater economic growth”.

This is the spirit that also inspired the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, who will be signing two treaties today for the building of a new railway line connecting the port of Burgas to the port of Alexandroupoli and a stretch of the motorway between Bulgaria and Greece. “We are grateful for your support to the European integration of Serbia”, the Prime Minister, Alexander Vucic, the only leader of a non-EU country, said. “I hope that, with your support, we will be able to prove that we can avoid any problem or accident and that we can watch over peace and security”.
