EU-Churches: meeting between institutions and religious communities. Migration, social integration and environment on the agenda

(Brussels) Today’s meeting between EU institutions and religious communities from across Europe focused on the main policy challenges Europe will face over the next year, as well as the perspectives for the future, beyond the European Parliament elections. “Participants – according to a European source – discussed in particular how the EU is addressing migration, social integration and the sustainability of our way of life”. Discussion also focused on other topical issues, including freedom of religion, the protection of fundamental rights, the social aspects of European integration, nationalism and populism. In previous meetings, participants had looked into the future of Europe through a number of challenges facing the European Union, in particular migration, terrorism and integration. At the meeting, religious communities were represented by: Metropolitan Athanasios (Greek Orthodox Church); Imam Khalid Benhaddou (Islam); Mgr. Mariano Crociata (Bishop of Latina, First Vice-President of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union COMECE); Rabbi Albert Guigui (Judaism); Mgr. Antoine Herouard (Bishop of Lille, COMECE); Robert Innes (Anglican Bishop); Frank July (Evangelical Church, Germany); and Christian Krieger (President of the Conference of European Churches – CEC).
