Church of England: Archdiocese of York, Bishop Sentamu announced resignation

(London) John Sentamu, the head of the Archdiocese of York, the second top position in the hierarchy of the Church of England, has announced his resignation. He will retire in June 2020, a few days before his 71st birthday. According to the British media, the Archbishop decided to break the news now to give the Church enough time to find a successor before the Lambeth Conference in August 2020, which is the most important event in the Anglican Communion, bringing together all the bishops every ten years. Dr Sentamu, the first black Archbishop of the “Church of England”, was able to show creativity in the office he has held for thirteen years. He made the headlines with his strong positions, which drew the attention of the British people, for the first time, to the Archdiocese of York. Brave was his decision to cut up his dog collar live on a BBC programme. “From now on – he said –, I am not going to wear a dog collar until Robert Mugabe is gone”. His pilgrimage on foot two years ago also made the headlines. He reached every parish of the Archdiocese, even under the snow and in bitterly cold weather, meeting 25,000 people. His legacy includes the “Archbishop of York Youth Trust”, an award programme involving 60,000 young people from 500 schools aimed at training young community leaders. Rumours are that a woman is likely to succeed him, the first female Archbishop of the Church of England.
