Young people: EU Commission, free travelling across Europe for 18-year-olds. Launch of second DiscoverEU competition

(Brussels) The European Commission will launch a second competition aimed at 18-year-olds in the EU who want to travel and discover Europe. DiscoverEU will be back from 29 November to 11 December, and all 18-year-olds by 31 December 2018 will be eligible to apply for a free ticket, giving them the opportunity to travel around Europe between 15 April and 31 October 2019. Last summer, the first edition of DiscoverEU involved approximately 15,000 young people, who built “a true community across Europe”, a statement from Brussels reads. They “linked up on social media formed groups to travel from city to city or stayed at each other’s places”. Those interested need to apply via the European Youth Portal. Successful applicants will be able to travel as individuals or in groups (of up to 5 people) by rail, bus or ferry, or, exceptionally, by plane. An evaluation committee will assess the applications and notify winners by mid-January 2019. Young people “experienced first-hand what it feels like to be European. They got the opportunity to discover Europe’s diversity and cultural richness as well as to meet people from all over the EU”, said Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics. The European Commission proposed to allocate €700 million to DiscoverEU under the future Erasmus programme, to give another million and a half 18-year-olds the chance to travel between 2021 and 2027. The goal is to make the DiscoverEU experience “even more effective and accessible”.
