Interreligious dialogue: PCID, first international conference for Buddhist and Christian nuns in Fo Guang Shan

“Contemplative Action and Active Contemplation: Buddhist and Christian Nuns in Dialogue” – this is the theme of the first international dialogue that is taking place in Fo Guang Shan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, organised by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID), in collaboration with Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Monastery, the Association of the Major Superiors of Religious Women in Taiwan, and Dialogue Interreligieux Monastique·Monastic Interreligious Dialogue (DIM·MID). Since 14 October, about seventy Buddhist and Catholic nuns have been attending the event, which will end tomorrow, 18 October. The agenda of the event includes talks about “The Origin, Evolution and Present-day Situation of Monastic Religious Life for Women in Buddhism and Christianity”; “Buddhist and Christian Approaches to Active Contemplation and Contemplative Action”; “Buddhist Meditation and Christian Contemplation”; the nuns’ “Service to Humanity”; “Promoting the Feminine Genius”; and finally, an exchange of views on “Stories of Buddhist-Christian Solidarity” to envision future possibilities. The meeting, a statement from the Pontifical Council explains, seeks to “promote dialogue of spiritual or religious experience” and to “create more space for women to participate in interreligious dialogue”. Attendees at the meeting include representatives of the Pontifical Council, a delegation comprised of fourteen Catholic monastic women from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and a representative of the World Council of Churches.
