Eurobarometer: immigration key-theme of electoral campaign. 44% of citizens do not know when European elections will take place

“Immigration now tops the agenda of citizens’ campaign priorities (50%), followed by the economy (47%) and youth unemployment (47%), whilst combatting terrorism moves down to fourth place with 44%”. This is according to the latest Eurobarometer survey, issued this morning. Italian citizens seem to have similar priorities, although “immigration is perceived as a key theme by 71% of respondents, followed by the economy with 62% and youth unemployment (59%)”. Almost all data measuring support for the EU – according to Eurobarometer – show a significant upturn following the UK referendum in 2016, with growing numbers of Europeans feeling concerned about the impact that Brexit will have. If a referendum were held, “66% of European respondents would vote for their country to remain a member of the EU and only 17%” would vote to leave. There is growing awareness of next year’s European elections, with 41% correctly identifying the date in May 2019 – a nine-point increase over a similar survey six months ago, with 51% of citizens declaring to be interested in the elections. However, 44% still could not say when the elections will be taking place.
