Colombia: Delegation of Bishops visiting COMECE and European institutions. Mgr. Urbina, “Europe’s support for peace” is “key”

The Delegation of the Colombian Bishops’ Conference (CEC) is on the second day of its visit to Brussels. From yesterday, it has been hosted by the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), together with CIDSE, Caritas Germany, Bread for the World (Brot für die Welt), and Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe. The CEC delegation is headed by its President, Mgr. Oscar Urbina Ortega, Archbishop of Villavicencio, and by Mgr. Héctor Fabio Henao, Director of the National Secretariat of Pastoral and Social Outreach for Caritas Colombia. Yesterday morning, the two prelates met a group of NGOs, at the initiative of COMECE, and subsequently joined in the work of the Commission on External Relations of the body. In the afternoon, they travelled to the headquarters of the European Commission and the European Parliament. They had various meetings, including one with the president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani. Today, they will have further talks with the European institutions. “The purpose of our trip – the president of the CEC told SIR news agency – is to get to know first-hand the organizations which have supported peace and reconciliation in our country. Now even greater emphasis should be placed on local initiatives to implement peace in different situations. It is a complex stage, it will take time, but the experience of international organizations and NGOs, which have a great deal of expertise, will make a difference. Of key importance then, at the political level, will be the European Union’s support for the peace process.
