Macedonia: referendum failed. Headlines in Balkan newspapers, “Zaev’s Waterloo, Tsipras’ cold shower”

The outcome of the referendum on Macedonia’s name change was given extensive coverage in the international press today, especially in the Balkan media. “Failure of the referendum” was the headline in the Croatian “Jutarnji list” where analyst Zeljko Trkanjec wrote: “Nothing changes, the process continues and depends on only one person” (Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, editor’s note). The reason behind this result is, according to the author, that “most Macedonians knew that the name-change process would continue, regardless of the outcome. Many people have ignored the vote, because the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party has softened its tone”. And he added: “The situation is schizophrenic. The party is against the Treaty, but supports the country’s accession to the EU and NATO”. According to the Croatian newspaper, Macedonians abstained from voting due to the “massive participation of the Albanian minority”. While the Serbian tabloid “BLIC” reads: “Boycott supporters celebrate in Skopje while a protest against Macedonia’s name change takes place in Thessaloniki”. Of course, the Greek media is taking a lot of interest in the topic, “Zaev’s Waterloo, Tsipras’ cold shower” is the title of a report in Athens newspaper “Elefteros tipos”. And here is a revealing comment in the German Süddeutsche Zeitung: “Macedonians did not show up”, “they now face years of isolation”.
