France: card. Barbarin (Lyon), “a big meeting” for separated, divorced and remarried couples. “Let’s build the Church together”

The Cardinal of Lyon, Philippe Barbarin, is speaking in a video posted on YouTube too, to invite separated, divorced and remarried couples to a “bug meeting” in the Cathedral of St John on October 15th. To “show everyone that they are not only supported by everyone’s affection, love and attention but above all that we need them, in the journey they are in, because we build the Church together”. Prompted by Chapter 8 of Amoris laetitia, the aim is to make people understand “to what extent God’s mercy is stronger than our problems or all the breaks we may have experienced”. Of course, the cardinal goes on, “God’s Word is a truth that cannot be changed, but it cannot even be nailed to a thinking system”, and, quoting Pope Benedict XVI, he points at the possibility that these people can just bring a breath of fresh air: “Maybe because of the pains you have gone through, you have something new to say to help everyone move on”. So, everyone will be meeting at 05.30 pm to listen to Cardinal Barbarin, then some stories from the parishes that have started programmes of discernment, as proposed by Pope Francis, the Vespers and a convivial event. The Cardinal writes, in his letter: “If you have felt judged, rejected or left out by a member of our Church because of your marital status, I ask you to forgive me, because none of such attitudes reflects the heart of the servant”, who, “as a bishop of the diocese, I want and I must be”.
