Migrants: Pope Francis will meet with bishops and delegates of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe gathered in Rome

On 22 September, Pope Francis will meet the bishops and national directors responsible for the pastoral care of migrants of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE). The annual meeting will be held behind closed doors at the Bonus Pastor House in Rome from 21 to 23 September. Besides the audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican in the morning, there will be a dialogue to exchange views with those in charge of the “Migrants and Refugees” Section of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Also, a report will be presented by Gian Carlo Blangiardo, professor at the University of Milano Bicocca, on the work of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences in the area of the pastoral care of migrants. “The national directors will discuss the current challenges to each country, concerning the reception and integration of migrants”, a statement from CCEE reads. Then the representatives of the Holy See will report on the priorities and projects on which the Vatican Dicastery is working. This moment of dialogue will conclude with a discussion on how to co-ordinate the various actors of the pastoral care of migrants in Europe (Holy See, Catholic Bishops’ Conferences, and International Church bodies). The meeting will end on Saturday, September 23, with a visit to the St. Saba Center, run by the Centro Astalli Association (the Jesuit Service for Refugees in Italy), which hosts asylum seekers and international protection holders.
